Indiana public officials praised Cummins’ decision to locate production of the Cummins 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel for Nissan in Columbus, keeping a commitment it made in 2006.

“The return of engine production to this building is great news for this community,” said U.S. Rep. Luke Messer, who lives in nearby Shelbyville and attended today’s announcement at CEP. “Cummins continues to demonstrate its commitment to this community, this state and this country!”

Cummins announced production of the V8 diesel in 2006. But the global downturn in 2008 left the Company without a buyer. Cummins spent four years looking for a new partner.

Connie Lawson, Indiana Secretary of State, praised Cummins for its persistence and determination, calling the Company “one of our best ambassadors of what makes Indiana great.”

Columbus Mayor Kristen Brown said news that the 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel will be in production soon at CEP was particularly meaningful to her. Her great-grand father, grandfather and her father all worked at the historic engine plant, which dates back to the 1920s.

“My father is bursting with pride that I get to be part of this announcement,” Brown said. She called the announcement a “reaffirmation of Cummins’ commitment to Columbus.”

She was only one of several public officials with family ties to Cummins. State Sen. Greg Walker, who represents Bartholomew and Johnson counties, said his father is a Cummins retiree who worked at CEP. He thanked Cummins for helping to pay for his college education.

And state Rep. Milo Smith, who also represents Bartholomew County, said he worked at an emissions laboratory in the Cummins Technical Center, across the street from the engine plant, about 40 years ago. He was never quite sure back then why the Company was so concerned about air pollution and fuel mileage. Today, the company is an environmental leader and he says the Company’s concern is paying off.

“Cummins, once again you are hitting a home run,” he said.

The level of commitment and the spirit of persistence really impressed me, as a Indiana University student. Although I am an international student, Indiana is my second hometown. It is so exciting to know Cummins will continue to make we Hoosiers better off.
