Cummins Receives Rabb Emison Organization Award for Diversity/Equality

Cummins Inc. has once again been recognized for its commitment to diversity, which is one of the Company’s six core values.

On Oct. 8, the Indiana State Bar Association’s (ISBA) Diversity Committee honored Cummins during their 118th annual meeting as the 2014 recipient of the Rabb Emison Organization Award for Diversity/Equality.

The Rabb Emison Awards recognize an individual and an organization that have demonstrated a commitment to promote diversity and equality in the legal profession and in the membership of the ISBA.

“This is an incredible recognition for Cummins on an issue that is part of our core values,” said Sharon Barner, Cummins Vice President and General Counsel. “As a company, we are committed to diversity because it ensures that we recruit and retain the best talent and because it’s the right thing to do.”

In 2014, Cummins spoke out against House Joint Resolution 3, a proposed amendment to the Indiana state constitution that would ban gay marriage.

“Diversity has been core value of the Company for a very long time,” says Marya Rose, Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer. “Our first chairman Irwin Miller understood that in addition to being the right thing to do, diversity had the potential to be a competitive advantage. We believe diversity helps to create a work environment where innovation and ideas flourish.”

Representatives from the Cummins legal team accepted the award during ISBA’s annual meeting at the Sheraton Indianapolis Hotel at Keystone Crossing.

This award is named in honor of Rabb Emison, a past president of the association, who was instrumental in encouraging diversity in the ISBA.

Previous winners of the award have included Black Law Students Association; IU McKinney School of Law; U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana; IU Law School, Indianapolis; Baker & Daniels LLP; Krieg DeVault, LLP; and Barnes & Thornburg LLP.

In July, the Minority Corporate Counsel Association recognized Cummins’ legal team as the Employer of Choice for the Midwest Region.
