MCCA Diversity Gala 2014The Minority Corporate Counsel Association (MCCA) has named Cummins Inc. the 2014 Employer of Choice for the Midwest Region. MCCA’s Employer of Choice Award honors general counsels and their law departments for their success in their internal and external diversity and inclusion initiatives.

Cummins received the award because Vice President and General Counsel Sharon Barner implemented several programs to increase internal and external diversity, including a Six Sigma convergence process that helped ensure that law firms receiving Cummins work were reflective of Cummins’ commitment to diversity. As a result of the 18-month convergence process, Cummins went from having no minority relationship partners to having four and from having a single female relationship partner to having three. In addition, the Cummins law department now includes more than 67 percent minorities and women, and more than 40 percent of the senior leadership team is diverse.

“The Cummins law department has made extraordinary strides in building diversity in a relatively short time,” said Joseph K. West, MCCA’s president and CEO. “The company’s long-standing commitment to diversity is the impetus for the company’s selection of outside counsel and recruitment of candidates.  Cummins has truly earned the title of Employer of Choice.”

Sharon accepted the award at the MCCA Diversity Gala on July 25 at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The event was hosted by NBC News White House Correspondent Kristen Welker, and featured actor, producer, director and social activist Laurence Fishburne as the special guest presenter. The event also included a musical performance by Grammy winner James Ingram.

“We are honored and thrilled to receive MCCA’s Employer of Choice Award for the Midwest Region,” Barner said. “Diversity is one of Cummins’ core values and we understand that a diverse workforce is essential to our success. Building on the strong foundation that our Chief Administrative Officer Marya Rose built, our law department fully supports and embraces this value by recruiting and hiring the best and most diverse talent, making our law department a great place to work.”
